The 'creep test' was carried out on an inflatable habitat that would be carried to other planets to house humans.
NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), based in Huntsville, Alabama, performed the test with Lockheed Martin Space, which is developing habitats for use in deep space.
MSFC said Monday (28 April): "Creep tests performed at Marshall are designed to take this space technology to its breaking point. The design achieved over 1,000 hours at pressure before bursting – well exceeding the planned duration."
Lockheed said, "Good things come to those who wait! Recently, we conducted a 100-hour creep to burst test our inflatable softgoods technology with NASA Marshall , where our test unit was pressurised to more than 4x its design pressure and exceeded its target, surviving for 4,177 hours!"
Inflatable habitats offer a chance for greater internal habitat volume when launched into space compared to traditional rigid modules like the International Space Station. This makes them ideal for long-term missions to the Moon, Mars , or deep space, where astronauts need spacious, shielded environments.
