The mysterious object spotted floating soundlessly a few hundred feet over Green Cove Springs on March 22 has not yet been identified, although training announced at the nearby Naval Air Station Jacksonville might have had something to do with it.

Florida is second only to California for UFO sightings with 8,623 reports since 1944 , according to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC). California has reported about twice that, NUFORC data shows. Maybe aliens like the sun?

There have been 34 sightings reported in Florida just this month, most of them explained as drones, a rocket and possibly a Chinese lantern . An annual report from the Pentagon revealed there were 757 new reports of UFO activity nationwide between May 2023 and June 2024.

But the important question, the real question: is Florida a good place to survive an alien invasion? Should we call Will Smith?

Researchers at online calculator site GIGAcalculator have run the numbers. They looked at population and population density, the number of UFO sightings, the average duration, how many caves each state had, how much area was covered by forests or water, the available military and law enforcement as well as the number of scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals and number of food and beverage manufacturing companies to produce an Alien Survival Score from 0-10.

"The state has the third most military members with 17 per 1k population," GIGAcalculator said in an email release. "It is also the ninth most forest-covered state, with 0.63% of the state hidden by forest to take shelter.

Next was Alabama, with 7.91 out of 10. The Appalachian foothills and mountains helped here, along with the 35 caves providing great hiding spots.

We missed the top five, but the Sunshine State came in 6th for invasion-from-above survivability with a score of 7.55.
