White speck seen over Topeka is a high-flying balloon
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It was labeled as a UFO, but after further research, the white speck seen over Topeka was a balloon.
According to flight data, the balloon has a registry of N253TH and was picked up near Blue Rapids, Kansas.
The balloon was seen over Topeka around noon Tuesday and floated over Lawrence at last track at 59,000 feet going about 16 kts.
13 NEWS reached out to the National Weather Service office in Topeka and they said they have not launched a weather balloon since 6:00a.m. Tuesday.

SOUTH CAROLINA (Mark Price/Charlotte Observer) - Video of a comet-like object reportedly seen over South Carolina has found its way to YouTube, resulting in an increasingly strange series of conspiracy theories and wild guesses.
It shows something streaking across the sky, but the object appears to be stationary. Meanwhile, what seems to be a passing aircraft flies behind it, and their white trails cross about one minute into the video.
Among the theories is the second craft was a government "spotter plane" sent to investigate a potential UFO.

Residents and dog walkers watched the strange object fly from the direction of Chirk towards Hawarden and Broughton.
One 60-year-old witness was in his back garden when he saw the disc flying at an estimated height of 100m at 5.30pm on Thursday (September 24).

"It was a flat disc, it was very strange. The wind was going in another direction, so I don't think it was floating, so it wasn't a balloon or a bin liner, it went in a straight line.
Japan is now tracking and investigating UFOs
TOKYO - Local Japanese news agencies reported earlier in September that Japan’s Defense Minister Taro Kono has requested the Self-Defense Forces follow new protocols regarding possible interactions or sightings of unidentified flying objects which might pose a threat national security.
In a statement obtained by Japan Times, Kono ordered members of the military beginning Monday, Sept. 14, to record, photograph and investigate any unknown objects that mysteriously enter Japanese airspace.
