We might have a new mini-moon soon

Image
We might have a new mini-moon soon Mini-moons, or TCOs (Temporarily Captured Objects) have probably occurred more over history than we know, but only two have ever been confirmed: 2006 RH120, which hung out in Earth orbit from 2006 to 2007, and the one discovered earlier this year, 2020 CD3, in Earth orbit from 2018 to 2020. Those objects were definitely small space rocks. But trajectory models of 2020 SO show it has an orbit very similar to Earth's, and is approaching at a very low speed—approximately 1,880 miles per hour (3,025 km/h) or 0.84 km per second (.5 mi/sec). That is an extremely slow speed for an asteroid, even a chunk of rock that could have been ejected from the Moon. The World's Space Agencies Are on a Quest to Deflect a (Harmless) Asteroid

Image
People have a bottomless appetite for all things space these days. Some space news is truly mind-blowing, like the first image of a black hole last year or this year's time lapse of said black hole's dancing shadow . Then there's news of the less mind-blowing variety. Second only to full coverage of every supermoon are headlines of near (but harmless) misses by asteroids. However, while a supermoon isn't too much more breathtaking than a run-of-the-mill full moon—those harmless near-misses actually do hint at something more significant. As our planet plows through space, its orbit inevitably crosses the orbits of other inhabitants of the solar system. Among this group are asteroids of all sizes. Most of these are so small they'd be vaporized by the atmosphere, but others are big enough to impact the surface and do serious damage. While hundreds of Jupiter-sized planets have been discovered orbiting larger sun-like stars, it is rare to see these planets orbiting low-mass host stars and astronomers think this discovery could help them better understand how these giant planets form. Second alignment plane of solar system discovered -- ScienceDaily

Image
A study of comet motions indicates that the Solar System has a second alignment plane. Analytical investigation of the orbits of long-period comets shows that the aphelia of the comets, the point where they are farthest from the Sun, tend to fall close to either the well-known ecliptic plane where the planets reside or a newly discovered "empty ecliptic." This has important implications for models of how comets originally formed in the Solar System. In the Solar System, the planets and most other bodies move in roughly the same orbital plane, known as the ecliptic, but there are exceptions such as comets. Comets, especially long-period comets taking tens-of-thousands of years to complete each orbit, are not confined to the area near the ecliptic; they are seen coming and going in various directions. Astronomers Just Revealed One of The Most Extreme Planets Ever Discovered

Image
Astronomers have taken detailed observations of an incredibly extreme exoplanet, detecting brutal surface temperatures in the region of 3,200 degrees Celsius (5,792 degrees Fahrenheit). Those temperatures – measured by the European Space Agency's CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (or CHEOPS) – are enough to melt all rocks and metals, and even turn them into a gaseous form. While the exoplanet, named WASP-189b , is not quite as hot as the surface of our Sun (6,000 degrees Celsius or 10,832 degrees Fahrenheit), it's basically as toasty as some small dwarf stars. White speck seen over Topeka is a high-flying balloon

Image
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It was labeled as a UFO, but after further research, the white speck seen over Topeka was a balloon. According to flight data, the balloon has a registry of N253TH and was picked up near Blue Rapids, Kansas. The balloon was seen over Topeka around noon Tuesday and floated over Lawrence at last track at 59,000 feet going about 16 kts. 13 NEWS reached out to the National Weather Service office in Topeka and they said they have not launched a weather balloon since 6:00a.m. Tuesday.
