Scientists are looking for evidence of alien technology in a faraway solar system with the most perfect mathematical alignment and synchrony of planets ever seen. The solar system, about 100 light years away from ours, has six planets orbiting an orange dwarf star called HD 110067. Each of the planets, researchers say, orbits in harmony with its adjacent ones in extremely rare perfect synchrony, suggesting they likely remain undisturbed since their formation a billion years ago. Like all exoplanets discovered by the Kepler space telescope, Kepler 37-b was detected using a technique called the transit method. As faraway planets orbit their stars, they transit — or pass in front of — their stars, creating a slight dimming of the star. For stars and planets in the right position relative to our solar system, scientists can analyze the dimming and infer not only the existence of a planet but also some of its properties — what it's made of, its distance from its star, and its size. With exoplanets, it's harder to say for sure, and it can be especially difficult to tell if an exoplanet is truly clearing debris and similarly sized objects from its orbit, Barclay said. Exclusive: Significant discovery, made by James Webb telescope, provokes disagreement over conditions on planet's surface Astronomers have observed a distant planet that could be entirely covered in a deep water ocean, in findings that advance the search for habitable conditions beyond Earth. "The ocean could be upwards of 100 degrees [Celsius] or more," said Prof Nikku Madhusudhan, who led the analysis. NASA has called it quits on a space mission that could have revolutionized the way we handle satellites after they run out of fuel. The satellite refueling mission, On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufactury 1 ( OSAM-1 ), has been in development since 2016. However, after multiple delays and soaring budget issues, NASA has retired the project altogether. Thus far, the spacecraft from the OSAM-1 mission was only partially built, and the growing costs were enough reason for an independent project review to call it into question. WASHINGTON — Blue Origin expects to launch the first version of its Blue Moon lunar lander, a precursor to a future crewed lunar lander it is developing for NASA, in 2025. "This lander, we're expecting to land on the moon between 12 to 16 months from today," he said, referring to a full-sized mockup of the lander behind him. "That is what our team is aiming towards." The Mark 1 lander is a cargo vehicle that is a technology demonstrator.
