Cosmic Shield: How Our Solar System Survived a Supernova

Image
By National Institutes of Natural Sciences June 30, 2023 Artist's impression of the blast wave from a supernova colliding with the molecular cloud filament where the Sun is forming. Credit: NAOJ Evidence gleaned from isotope ratios within meteorites indicates that a supernova detonation occurred nearby while our Sun and Solar System were still in their formative stages. The resulting blast from that supernova could have potentially destroyed the nascent solar system. Publisher: SciTechDaily Date: 2023-06-30T11:46:14-07:00 Reference: (Read more) Visit Source

What's Up - July 2023

Alien planet may be hiding at the edge of our solar system | Space

Image
In 1906, astronomer and businessman Percival Lowell launched a search for "Planet X," a hypothetical giant planet orbiting the sun beyond Neptune. Lowell was convinced that Planet X existed based on some supposed irregularities he had observed in the orbits of Neptune and Uranus. Today, the Planet X hypothesis is largely considered to be discredited . However, that hasn't stopped astronomers from looking for planets in the far reaches of the solar system. And according to a new study, they might be out there — only much farther away than Lowell could have predicted.
